Lecture of Dr. Evelina Kelbecheva, Professor at the American University in Bulgaria

On January 31st Dr. Evelina Kelbecheva, Professor of History at the American University in Bulgaria, gave a presentation on “The Politics of (non)-Memory in Communist Bulgaria”. The event was co-hosted by the Bulgarian Embassy and the American Research Center in Sofia Foundation.

Professor Kelbecheva talked about communist-era monuments and the intentional distortion of the historical remembrance of the totalitarian regime in Bulgaria. She stressed the importance of including the history of communism and totalitarian regimes during the XX century as part of the school history curriculum.
Dr. Evelina Kelbecheva is an internationally renowned Professor of History at the American University in Bulgaria, Fulbright scholar, and Jean Monnet Title-Holder. She has lectured at prestigious universities in the United States and Europe. Her primary interests and publications are in social and cultural history of Bulgaria and Europe.

The American Research Center in Sofia (ARCS) is a non-profit foundation which facilitates academic interaction, research, and activities in the humanities and social sciences in Bulgaria and neighboring countries. ARCS provides logistical support to American scholars and students in Bulgaria, fosters research and collaboration between North American scholars and those in Bulgaria and neighboring countries.
