ARCS Fellows complete the spring study trip
During a week-long tour (March 21 - March 25), and under the auspices of inclement weather, ARCS Fellows led by Dr. Emil Nankov visited many important Roman and Medieval sites and museums in northern and northeastern Bulgaria. The primary focus of the trip was the archaeology of the Roman presence in the Lower Danube region, complemented with some time devoted to a couple of significant sites dated to the Second Bulgarian kingdom. Among the places and towns reached were Sostra, Pavlikeni, Nicopolis ad Istrum, Sexaginta Prista, Cherven, Abritus, Shumen fortress, Madara, Mausoleum of Vladislav Varnenchik, Roman baths in Varna, and Marcianopolis. All participants delivered two site reports. To a great extent ARCS trip made way through archaeological sites and museums we were able to support through site preservation grants over the last five years. We are grateful to the hospitality and openness of the colleagues based at the museums in Pavlikeni, Veliko Tarnovo, Ruse, Razgrad, Shumen,Varna and Devnya, who made our trip more rewarding and enjoyable!
