ARCS' Subsidy Made Possible the Poetic Translation in Bulgarian of "Antigone" of Sophocles

American Research Center in Sofia is delighted to announce that the new translation of "Antigone" of Sophocles by Kiril Merjanski was just recently published with ARCS’ financial support. The book was selected for subsidy as part of the 2013 ARCS publication competition. The program was made possible with the generous support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation.

This edition presents "Antigone" of Sophocles in a new poetic translation into the Bulgarian - the work of Kiril Merjanski - historian and longtime professor at NGDEK (the National Lyceum of ancient languages and cultures). He is a renowned contemporary poet, author of books on ancient themes, which are among the masterpieces in the Bulgarian poetry. He has worked on translating “Antigone” more than fifteen years.

Consultant and editor of the book is the expert on ancient Greek language and literature Dorothea Tabakova (Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski"). Author of the foreword is Dr. Yordan Evtimov, a professor at the New Bulgarian University, whose text is rich literary and easily understandable. The added synopses and ideas for essays will facilitate the teaching and learning of "Antigone" as an "exemplary tragedy" in the Bulgarian schools.
