ARCS' Subsidy Made Possible a New Publication

American Research Center in Sofia is pleased to announce that the monograph entitled, “Typology and Chronology of Late Bronze Aage and Early Iron Age Bronze Socketed Spearheads in Southeastern Europe” by Lyuben Leshtakov was just recently published with ARCS’ financial support. The book was selected for publication subsidy as part of the 2014 ARCS publication competition. The program was made possible with the generous support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation. The monograph is based on Lyuben Leshtakov's disseration. By providing subsidies for publications like this ARCS supports young and emerging specialists and makes accessible their work to a wider audience.

Typology and Chronology of Late Bronze Aage and Early Iron Age Bronze Socketed Spearheads in Southeastern Europe by Lyuben Leshtakov, ATE − Ars et Technica Explicatus, Sofia, 2015 (In Bulgarian with English summaries).

This study is an attempt to build a typology and follow the chronological development of bronze socketed spearheads in the Mycenaean world and the eastern part of Central Europe, their origins and influence in the Bronze Age warfare. Chapters II and III are devoted to spearheads' manufacturing technology and decoration. Chapter IV represents the use of spears and javelins in combat. The final chapter of the book attempts to outline some large geographic areas in Europe where the development of bronze socketed spearheads followed local traditions.
