March 6 - EUGENE SCHUYLER LECTURE

ARCS hosts its annual Eugene Schuyler Lecture on March 6, 5:30 p.m. with Prof. Dennis Hupchick. Dr. Eugene Schuyler (Feb. 26, 1840 – July 16, 1890) was an American scholar and diplomat whose career brought him to the Balkans. After spending several years as a US diplomat in Russia, Schuyler was named consul-general in Turkey (1876). He arrived several months after Bulgaria’s “April Uprising” and was a prime mover in the documentation of atrocities of the Turks in Bulgaria – he was expelled from Turkey in 1878. Afterwards, he served in England, Romania, Serbia and Greece before moving back to the USA to teach at Johns Hopkins University and Cornell University. A major event at ARCS is the annual Eugene Schuyler Lecture.

The 2013 Eugene Schuyler Lecturer is Prof. Dennis Hupchick., senior member of the history faculty at Wilkes University (Pennsylvania, USA), former Fulbright Scholar to Bulgaria and past president of the Bulgarian Studies Association. His lecture to take place March 6, 5:30 p.m. in the Aula Magna of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences discusses the life of an important American scholar of the Bulgarian National Revival period, James Clarke.

The first Bulgarian translation of The Pen and the Sword, a compilation of Clarke's work edited by Prof. Hupchick, will be presented following the lecture.

The entrance to Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is on "15 Noemvri" St., near the National Assembly Building and the Aleksander Nevski Church.
